UNSW's commercialisation arm, NewSouth Innovations (NSi) has signed a deal with Australia's largest manufacturer of steel long products, OneSteel, that gives the steel-maker exclusive rights to sub-license unique technology to reduce reliance on coke and coal in electric arc furnace (EAF) steel-making.

Invented and developed by materials scientist Professor Veena Sahajwalla, the technology substitutes up to 30 percent of coke and coal with polyethylene waste plastic, thereby reducing landfills and producing a win for the environment.
