Seems like your problem might be a bit simpler,
it might be the TVIS butterflies flapping. Turns out its a common problem on the 85-86's.

I think it just needs a valve lash adjustment cause since its only making the knock at idle that usually means something in the valvetrain is off cause when it starts reving the valves will naturaly get adjusted with compression and there will be less or no sound.Actual rod knocking would get louder as revs increase the same with piston slap and spun bearings.

Doesnt seem like a rod knock, shouldnt it get worse when the engine rpm is raised if it were a rod?

Thank you. I did a compressions test on all four cylinders (from 1-4) and the it show 161, 161, 147, and 161. I disconnected the TVIS vacuum hose, but the noise is still there. It's loud., The noise is about 80-100 dB. We removed the valve covers to check for worn camshaft, but it's okay. Now I think it's the timing belt tensioner.

@ReplacingBox
Did you find out what was the knocking sound was? Thanks!

@bongborin I think it was an exhaust leak on #1 on the exhaust manifold, but never found out since the car was rear ended and totaled
