What is smelt? A tiny little fish thats utterly delectable breaded and deep fried. Every spring, Shaws Crab House locations in Chicago & Schaumburg (Illinois) host an all-day bus excursion to the annual American Legion Smelt Fry in Port Washington, Wisconsin.
The event begins with check-in at Shaws and a fabulous buffet breakfast including Mimosas and Bloody Marys. On the road, we enjoy a box lunch with beer and wine, and sing silly smelt songs (familiar tunes with parody lyrics). Following a side trip to historic Cedarburg (not shown), the 5 busloads of party goers arrive in Port Washington and assemble for a group photo before lining up to enter American Legion Post #82 for all the smelt you can eat, served up as always with cole slaw, fries and rye bread. The return trip on the bus gets even sillier with even more beer, wine (HIC!) and fun.
