Israel -Around 2,000 ultra-Orthodox Jews protested at an Israeli plant of giant US chipmaker Intel for the second Saturday in a row, voicing outrage at the factory's decision to operate on the Sabbath.

Angry shouts of "Shabbat, Shabbat" rose from outside the Jerusalem plant, where many sported black fedoras or large wheel-shaped fur hats and gowns traditionally worn by the Haredi, as the ultra-Orthodox Jews call themselves.

Police were out in force and repeatedly chased protesters out of the factory's parking lot.

Factory guards hurled water at the protesters, who threw rocks and spat at journalists.

Four demonstrators were arrested, police said.

The Haredis are outraged at the factory's decision to operate on Saturdays, which they see as a grave desecration of the Jewish holy day of rest.

The Intel protest follows a series of sometimes violent demonstrations by ultra-Orthodox people against the opening of a Jerusalem car park on the Jewish Shabbat, which runs from Friday sunset to Saturday sunset.

About 200 protesters gathered again Saturday against the opening of the car park, police said.

Ultra-Orthodox Jews are concerned the moves contribute to the secularisation of Jerusalem, a holy city where the Haredi community makes up about one-third of the 750,000 population.
The protests were sharply condemned by Israel's mainstream media which ridiculed the claim that the Saturday protests do not desecrate Shabbat since they aim at saving it.

The Jerusalem Post decried what it called bullying by "a scowling ultra-Orthodox minority."

"Sometimes it seems as if there's an evil mastermind out there determined to make Jewish tradition, observance and ritual seem repellent, retrograde even ridiculous to as many unaffiliated and secular Jews as possible," the English-language newspaper said.

  • These charedim, are no different than the muslim extremists... they are attempting to force others to live the same backward life as they have chosen. If Moses were live today, he would mow these crazy people down with an Uzi machine gun for their perversion of Judaism.

  • San Nicandro

  • I think this is chillul hashem btw.

  • @IanHunedoara8

That's kinda what this is all about.

  • haha the one guy with the plastic on his hat.

  • You think your protests will help anything? why don't the "Haredim" actually go out and bring people to Torah Judaism? (First themselves follow the Torah properly and then preach to simple Jews). Making such protests only inflames things and makes people HATE religion.

  • Fuck the voilent medina who treat their own people like shit

  • I think the message here is that Judiasm is NOT a one-size-fits-all black suit. and a democratic society needs separation between church and state.

  • @RealNewsRealStupid the hat is made by Barcelona I think; and it isn't cheap...
