  • how do you write an equation in standard form with roots -4, 10

  • @Denali1994 The easiest way to do this problem is to first write it in factored form. If we have a root, a, then we know that one of our factors would be (x - a). So, in application if we have a root x = -4 then we have a factor (x + 4). If we have a root x = 10 then another factor would be (x - 10). If these are our factors then we can put them together to get:

    y = (x + 4)(x - 10) Now to get that into standard form we would just FOIL

    y = x^2 + 4x - 10x - 40 and simplify

    y = x^2 - 6x - 40
