A Lesson in Landmines

About 20 Missouri State University students traveled in November 2008 to the US Department of Defense Humanitarian Demining Training Center at Fort Leonard Wood, to learn about efforts around the world to detect and disable land mines and other ordnance. The students were able to experience how soldiers train to recognize and remove mines. They also met with the commanding officer of the base, who answered questions on topics including international relations, public service, and Army policy.

Dr. Kenneth Rutherford led the trip, giving students the opportunity for real-world experience in international issues without leaving the state of Missouri. Students learned to understand the role land mines play in the economy, politics and history of a nation. They said it was worth braving the cold weather and 5am wakeup call. Dr. Rutherford believed the visit would get students thinking about how to make the world a better place.
