@ChaunceyDos Eh, not really. When James found form from 2005-2008, he adopted a much more conservative style of play. Instead of hitting balls that pulled him off the court very hard, he would play a sliced shot to keep him in the point for sure. Yes, he still hit very big winners from low percentage places, but he was definitely playing a much more mature style in those years. After he got some injuries after 2008, he reverted back and has struggled to find consistent form.

@ChaunceyDos there is a difference between santoro's and blake's case though. santoro can only play his style of tennis. but it's not about blake's style of tennis (it's totally conventional), but making smarter plays. he could have also hit the same forehand with slightly less power and more security and still clearly mark the point. he does not have to change his tennis, just see that his weakness are too many unforced errors. reducing your errors doesn't mean you have to change who you are.

@jamnsocks Yeah, they're pretty great when he gets them in position.

@BrotherTree1 also almagro, he can really rip it when he gets a ball in his strike zone

Best beastly forehands: Gonzalez, Blake, Federer, Tsonga, Monfils (when he really goes for it), del Potro, Soderling......
This sums up Blake's problem. He only wants to impress the crowd with low percentage highlight reel shots. This video doesn't show you the 5 of these he missed before getting one in.

Blake said he tried to play higher percentage tennis and his ranking dropped. He reached the top 10 when he went back to smash mouth tennis. Similarly, Santoro said he tried to play a conventional style, but didn't reach top 50 until he decided to play slice, off speed, strange tennis. Similar in that they recognized their strengths and designed idiosyncratic games that would maximize their abilities. Not everybody can be Davydenko.
