The "nappy lock" tool is exactly like a giant needle threader for sewing. Works great on the hair too apparently.

@evealexsis Don't go back to those, tools they definitly do thin the hair, you'll be much better off palm rolling and for extra hold and strength use the backcombing technique. That's all that's required along with your regular shampoo's & cond.for healthy locs. I'm licensed and do not recommend these tools at all. I can alway's tell the difference between the natural locs and those being done with tools. You can see right through them! GBU! Peace!

@HealingHerbsByRene Even though it's been some time since you wrote this I felt you need that confirmation that you are absolutely right the tools do begin to thin the hair. I've suggested to people to stop, and their hair regained it's thickness and strength back almost emediately. I am a licensed Cosmetologist specialising in locs and I refuse to use these tools, The only tool I use from time to time is a comb to back comb the hair for a tighter twist. Love to share!

What if your hair has been started off with a palm roll and started locking can a latch tool be used?
-
Great video. I just started locking almost 3 months ago and my loctitian is maintaining my locs by interlocking (I've had my roots interlocked once since I've started). To be honest, I prefer the look of palmrolled locs, but interlocking imo is a lot more practical.

As a loctician I can see a clear difference. While both techniques have pros and cons I find that latched locs look and feel more frizzy as compared palm rolled. Also with latching if not done correctly can leave holes in the loc that can not be corrected as well as breakage if pulled too tightly.
I have decided to go "freeforming" and leaving my hair well alone!!! The latching has broken my hair too badly so I feel its time to have a good 6-12 month break and then depending on how much stronger the base of my hair is, I might go back to it. Can hair that has been latched be palm rolled instead? This has always made me think. I would palm roll it but will my hair be stronger?

@evealexsis i went back and forth all the time. this vid is a couple of years old. i dont even have locs anymore. but towards the end, i latched about twice a year and palmrolled inbetween when i wanted to neaten it up. the strength of your hair is depedant on a lot of things: how tight you latch/plamroll, how often you latch/palmroll, the overall health and thickness of your hair, ect. so i can't say if it will or won't be stronger.

Is there anyway to do this on straight hair? I'm white i got dreadlocks about 2 months ago and yours look awesome. the other thing is mine are pretty big. i have 34 on my whole head =/ if its possible also where could i get one?

@instinktgraffiti any type of hair can be interlocked. your locs sound pretty big, so i would suggest you make your own home-made latching tool. look around on youtube, there are a few vids about how to make a home-made tool, or you can finger latch.

I've been reading that crocheting and latch hook is very damaging to locks, it looks really good for a while but putting the medal through your hair Slowly brakes off the Roots..
Now I had locks for ten years now, I was like you, i palm rolled for years, then i fingered it like using a latchhook, then the last few years i started using the latch hook tool.. Slowly seeing my locks thinner and alot of loose or broking short hair at the roots, now i'm going back the palmroll.
seen any thinning?

@HealingHerbsByRene this is very intresting info, as i have never heard it before. i do have slight thinning, but this is b/c the latching makes my locs more compact. i also have a little more frizziness, but this is b/c latching doesn't catch all the stray little hairs like palmrolling does. i'm going to theorize that people who experience this are latching too tightly and too often. you can get the same kind of damage from palmrolling too tightly or too often. thanks for your comment!
