Kumi Naidoo, honorary president of CIVICUS and co-chair of the Global Call to Action Against Poverty, is in day seven of a 21-day hunger strike in support of the struggling people of Zimbabwe. He recorded this video message from Johannesburg to urge Avaaz members throughout Africa and the world to join the solidarity action by pledging to fast for a day. Kumi will bring the messages and names of fasters around the world to the African Union summit on Sunday, February 1 and urge other African leaders to stand up to Robert Mugabe.

  • Though he is an Indian he has an African accent

  • Today, as I fast I am mindful of you Kumi(in your eleveth or twelfth day of your fast). I am choosing to read this ongoing commentary of support and awareness to continue to be mindful throughout the day. I am being prayerful/peaceful/gentle in hopes that this action is shared by all and will spread like a cool breeze to you and the people of Zimbabwe. I remain profoundly grateful for this opportunity to fast together, knowing that you asked for this and we are choosing to give in abundance.

  • I join you in your efforts to help end world hunger and the desperate situation in Zimbabwe. I hope that it makes a difference. We can choose to try to make a difference and we never know what the result will be if we dont try. It would be impossible for me to eat to my fill during this planned day of fasting while others in the world are starving. Thank you for the awareness.

    peace and love

  • Maybe it won't have a great impact in the economics - this number of people, just one day. But it spreads to the media. Is like a threat. 250.000 people volunteered to do that tomorrow and it will have media coverage everywhere. If this spreads - if more people join the strike, if it lasts longer - it will have a huge impact. This is just a sample of how far people are willing to go for justice, because world leaders haven't understood it yet - the world population is wiling to starve for peace.

  • Only you not eating won't probably help at all. 250.000 people not eating will change a lot. Eating is a basic need - just like the ones people of Zimbabwe are being deprived off - so, a big number of people refusing to satisfy their own basic needs in protest to what Mugabe is doing it's a powerful move that shows exactly how revolting this whole situation is. In more practical terms, it's a lot of people not buying food for one day.

  • Difficult to hear- but will do and thankyou for standing solidarity.. I agree with SPARTAAA...put out a petition for to expose fake, big-profit make 'economic crisis', or bogus, scam "world food crisis".by the WFP , wealthy, GOZ etc!!!

and as KUMI says this crisis is made by man and not a natural disaster! Thank you

  • I'd be happy to fast if it could help but I fail to see how me not eating during one day will make any change, can someone explain?

  • Hi alice, so unfortunately avaaz didn't put out a petition for to expose fake, big-profit make 'economic crisis', or bogus, deep shit scam "world food crisis".

UN's hand are tight since they are managed by the most greedy.

  • I read recently that the UN food donations to Zimbabwe are to be cut in half due to the "economic crisis". These people need help now!

Global calls to action generally have petitions to sign as well. Does nayone know of any??
