Certainly a pivotal erroneous umpiring decision, not only for Langer, but for the Langer-Hayden opening partnership, the prolific nature of which would be central to Australia's success for the next five years. On the other hand, it didn't do New Zealand too much immediate harm, since they nearly won that series, probably coming as close to beating Australia in Australia as any team in the 15 years between 1993 and 2008.

This letoff changed Langer's career. If this was given out he could have had a very different summer.

@Mladenovski28 Absolutely. At the time he wasnt a certainty to play in that series, mumblings were that a proper opener was needed, but not many were scoring runs at the start of the shield season, especially Michael Slater who was very much in the frame for a quick recall. Lots of press at the time were unhappy about the prospect of two left handers opening, which I guess has been shown to be a ridiculous problem to think about, especially by the end of the SA series when we just smashed them.
