I took my first ever ride on Amtrak yesterday. By the looks of things, I'm going to be a frequent rider throughout this year (probably a round trip about every month). The trip was very pleasant. The ticket was cheap ($19, which beat gas and driving), the seat was comfortable, walking around the train and up to the snack car was fun, and it gave me a good chance to get some work done. The train seen here was the 313.

  • how long was the ride on the train

  • @crazyboy72375 Sorry for the late reply! 2 hours, 22 minutes. That's compared to about 2 hours driving in perfect traffic, which is rare in St. Louis. This definitely beats driving out during rush hour on a Friday evening!

  • elevatorchannel, once i rode amtrak to and from chicago. that was trains 449 and 448. the leading 4 indicates boston ma origination. other 4xx trains are the NHV SPG shuttle. mostly i ride them or the vermonter. enough car drivers riding amtrak can add a 3rd river runner. seats look like coach class. your return trip may be on train 316.

  • @Balarick I returned on the 314 today. Another comfortable trip, but we ran into track issues and had to stop for nearly 30 minutes.

  • My sister was on a train for her first time yesterday? And shes still on it!

  • Cute video and awesome end. I love trains! :)

  • For all viewers of this video, Kirkwood is a hot spot for railfans. The Union Pacific Jeff City sub is a busy line. A lot of coal gets shipped via this line. At times Amtrak would dispatch the big Superliners over this line during the winter.

  • @TheElevatorChannel no worrys jacob i know you are a busy guy was it a nice ride

  • @ShawnJVirchow Given, the city center has some pretty rough areas. It has lost over half of it's population since 1950 due to white flight and a decline in the manufacturing sector. I live in the city now at Saint Louis University. The neighborhood around me isn't the best, but I don't feel uncomfortable walking around.

  • @ShawnJVirchow In lack of better terms, that study is a load of crap. You see, the crime rate is only calculated for St. Louis City, which is really quite small. While most cities have expanded their borders over the years, St. Louis has remained nearly the same size for almost 100 years. Because of this, only the city center (the highest area for crime in nearly any city) is the only part that is represented. When factoring in the county around the city, the crime rate is below average.

  • An excellent video, and editing job too. I took Amtrak from Rochester to Toronto and back once in the early 1980s. That was a LONG time ago... :)

  • I LOVE KIRKWOOD station!! used to railfan there as a kid.
