SS Ranganathan, former Managing Director of Ion Exchange Services India Ltd, draws on his work consulting with apartments and layouts regarding their wastewater treatment (or more specifically, the lack thereof) at the Water Reality and Solutions workshop sponsored by ApartmentAdda.com, Citizen Matters and Biome Environmental Solutions.




Mr. Ranganathan argues that developers routinely underdesign their sewage treatment plants (STPs), leading to an essentially "sewage in, sewage out" scenario. The macro-level implications of so many chronically dysfunctional STPs are alarming.

We need practical STP solutions if we are going to prevent sewage from contaminating the groundwater sources so many depend on. Fortunately, there is no shortage of environmentally sustainable options. Here's just a brief selection of possibilities:
