Time-lapse of the construction of my final sculpture at the University of Maryland.

The piece is an exploration in parametric design and modular prefabrication. Every piece is a 21.5" cut of 2x4, but each piece has had four unique holes pre-drilled so that the form takes on a unique, pre-determined shape.

Facts:
1. There are 792 modular pieces.
2. Pre-fabrication took 2 months.
3. Assembly took 2 days.
4. Final height is 11'-1.5"
5. Maximum diameter is 8'-6"

  • There were 792 2x4x21.5" boards that each had four unique holes drilled 1/2" into them. These holes received dowels during assembly to insure correct alignment, but they are not structural. There is a screw at every joint - the piece could stand without them, but it would not be safe for public display (i.e., people like to climb on it). However, at every eighth layer I omitted the screws so that the piece could be disassembled with ease.
