What's that got to do with the law exactly? Do you believe them bullying you was any worse than them bullying anyone else? I believe in harsher punishments for everyone, violence should be treated as violence, not split into smaller groups that does nothing other than confuse the law and more often than not result in lesser punishment.

Sorry to hear that such a thing happened. All assaults are insensitive acts of hate and trying to further criminalize acts based on the supposed motivations - I believe - perpetuates bigotry by drawing attention to differences. I live in Canada and although we have hate-speech laws, bigots still exists. You can never effectively legislate against thought.

I disagree with Sen. Demint on most things ("life at conception"? No unmarried teachers?) but freedom should also mean freedom of conscience.

People can think what they want, but acting on those impulses needs to be punished, in all situations. Not just ones against gays or African-Americans. Hate can come from anywhere.

A fucking hick? I'm glad to see you are able to bring your sense of civility to a discussion about the principle of law. Crime itself is a tragedy and there are no victimless crimes. Yet punishing people for their thoughts is not what the law was written to accomplish. It was written to punish an action. It's not a random act of disobedience, serious offences are not lumped in with jay walkers. What you wish is to abolish the principle of blind justice.

I would put someone who kills because of race or homosexuality and someone who just picks a random person to kill on equal grounds, actually.

Both are bad because they killed someone who did nothing to deserve it, so they should be treated the same.

You are a fucking hick. It's people like you that undermine the progress of this country. You have no idea what some people have to go through. Hate Crimes legislation will make examples of people who are prejudiced, instead of lumping them in with other random acts of disobedience. You don't deserve to be a leader, especially not of this great country.

Senator DeMint is, as usual, right on the money. I'm gay myself and I know that I deserve no extra protection from the law just because of that. We are all equal under the law, someone killed for no reason and someone killed for being gay/black/muslim is no different, both are murder. To give extra rights to the latter victim is to say that the other victim has less right to justice. Unfortunately due to the political correctness brigade this law passed, flying in the face of equal justice.
