  • Hi, Many thanks for your comment. Your comment is good information; I didn't know that chicks continue to be fed past their own ability to feed themselves. I've always said that I learn something new everyday. Again, many thanks for your comment.

  • Just like human adolescents pileated woodpeckers get fed for a considerable time long after fledging

  • Thanks for your comment. I'm not enough of a birder to know how old the chick was, but it looks pretty big and very capable flying while still being fed by the adult bird. Also, it's pecking away on its own.

  • Great vid!

  • We were very lucky. The tree is very close to our deck and the birds stayed there feeding for about an hour. This gave my son plenty of time to get out his camera and taped them. He must have about an hour's worth of source tape from which he edited the four minute tape that was posted. Thanks for your comment.

  • Wow, talk about being in the right place at the right time! Fantastic, thank you!

  • Actually, the branch of that tree is only about 5 feet from our deck and we were sitting in the living room when the birds showed up. They stayed about an hour, giving my son plenty of time to set up his camera and shoot the action. clearly, we were very lucky.

  • All woodpecker young are dependent on their parents for supplemental feedings even when they can fly proficiently and are physically as large as adults. I dont want to sound too anthropomorphic but I strongly believe that being fed by an adult provides emotional support as well even though if forced the young woodpecker could find its own food.

    Cheers!

  • Very nice, clear video. Amazing to catch them like that. I love the excitement in your voice seeing these Pileated Woodpeckers interacting.
