This event, co-presented with the Chess Club and Scholastic Center of Saint Louis, invited visitors to watch and play live chess matches with Grand Masters from the U.S. Women's Chess Championship (October 3-13). The defending U.S. Women's champion and Olympic Gold Medalist, Anna Zatonskih, kicked off the day by playing five players blindfolded. Inspired by the Contemporary's exhibition, this special day-long event celebrated the game that has puzzled players for centuries. Spectators were welcome, and people could sign up to participate in a bounty blitz tournament or a simultaneous exhibition. Hula Chess, a variation of the game developed by Jennifer Shahade a writer, games player, and two-time American Womens Chess Champion (2002, 2004) was installed in the courtyard for public play.
