Slavery: not a black and white issue

The process of abolishing slavery began over two hundred years ago. The first big step began in England. The attempt to downplay the role of white people in this fight is farcical. It was white people who first made the universal abolition of slavery of all people, not just their own tribe, race or co-religionists, a political goal.
Slavery is (largely) a thing of the past and that is mostly down to the efforts of white people. Don't let anybody suggest that guilt for the institution of slavery comes with being white.

martin ,slavery is very much alive and well in africa ...right NOW ,as we speak .saudi arabia didnt officially outlaw slavery until 1965 and indeed ,it is the muslim arabs and their black cohorts who are BY FAR ,the most profligate slavers today .tens of thousands of blacks are STILL enslaved EVERY year ,this is a FACT .

now listen ,hear those crickets ? .yes ..that IS the sound of OUTRAGE being made by ALL blacks and liberals in europe and the US about ACTUAL,right NOW slavery .pitiful,no?

@woodenmajor Absolutely. It is still the whites who are making the running on the anti-slavery mission. Once it was no longer whites enslaving blacks the blacks seem to have stopped caring about their fellow blacks. For centuries it was blacks trading blacks to Arabs. The reason the British Empire extended across Eastern Africa was to end the Swahili slave trade of blacks being bought by Arabs, with the men often castrated.

@BarryGormley2010 Why limit yourself to just whites? There are plenty of useless black people who get off on the achievements of other black people, and some of those are mythical achievements. Judging anybody, including yourself, by the membership of a group is wrong, and if that's your only source of personal pride you are living a sorry life, and if you're white (but only if you are white) you can expect some leftist to come along and spit on you for trying to polish your turd of a life.

@SpookyFan Joseph Cinque, I cut the name out of the script because I wasn't sure how it should be pronounced. Sink or sank? There were also several Negroes in the American South in the 1860s who owned more than 60 slaves, some were even involved in slave breeding, a concept which makes your skin crawl, no matter its colour.

It's not a black and white issue at all, in either sense of the phrase.

I feel that something should be said about how much it matters who's dad owns slaves and who's dad was a slave. Frankly I wouldn't feel any guilt (not to say I wouldn't feel bad about it) if my father owned you today. I would try to free you and I would hate my father for it for the rest of his life but I would not feel responsible for it. I would help you only on the idea that you are a fellow man and should be helped.

if not for Wilberforce and other enlightened ,ordinary WASP businessmen in London ,the west African slave trade might well have continued another century or more ,certainly, the Spanish ,dutch and Portuguese were in no great hurry to end the slave trade .It was the frigates of the RN that made american maritime slave trading untenable and shut down the arab sea trade as well.....At its very WORST, the west african trade was positively benign compared with the arab ,east african trade .

It should be known that 1 of the reasons Ghadaffi was disliked by his fellow arabs was due to the fact that he was the ONLY arab leader who appologised to the rest of black africa for arab involvement in the slave trade in centuries past.

This put many other arab countries' noses out of joint.

NONE wanted to take responsibility for that misery.
