It's pretty clear to me that religion needs divisive issues in order to make people choose a side. The gay issue is perfect for this since most people are generally somewhat offended by the idea of homosexuality, even if they're not an outright homophobe. Something like the two-linen "rule" would be far TOO divisive though, so they purposely and conveniently overlook it. Same with working on the sabbath, (which people used to literally be punished for during the first few centuries).

This question is so logical that there is no religious answer for it. I would almost consider it rhetorical. Why do people nitpick obscure 2000 year old text for a reason to get furious at homosexuality? Because, they fear what they do not understand. Such is life.

The bible doesn't say anything about being gay.

Its simple - gays are a minority the majority can unite against and oppress. The cant unite against liars e.g. because everyone lies. They need a "sin" that most ppl wouldnt ever do that way they can set themselves up as holier than the few gays.
In the words of Hitler "The efficiency of the truly national leader consists primarily in preventing the division of the attention of a people, and always in concentrating it on a single enemy"

Nick the answer is simple.
Many religious people are ignorant, intolerant and biggoted. They take what they want out of the bible and use it to justify their already corrupt beliefs.
This is why religion needs to be stamped out in all of its forms. Then we can see these people for what they really are since they won't have some pathetic book to hide behind.

I think they're so adamant because it is the very last public institution that has some overlapping magisteria with religious tradition. It is christianity's version of The Battle of Little Bighorn, except marriage (unlike Col. Custer) has managed to survive. Religious leaders know that when religion becomes 100% irrelevant to marriage, they will have lost their last man in the fight. Consequently, the godless heathens can live without ever needing religious permission for anything.

To all who is against homosexuality. We all have reproductive parts to REPRODUCE...we all have a heart to love. A penis and a vagina is solely for making babies they have no emotions in them. We love with our heart and soul so starting using your hearts and souls and love one another. Yes it is impossible for a man to impregnate a man but why can't he love him? Or for a woman to love another woman?
-
@lmbluke Your logic suggests that we should also kill out those who are sterile, because they can't reproduce. Of course the bible doesn't say to be disgusted- but the religious idiots see it that way.
Ah, "IF WE WERE ALL GAY WE'D BE DEAD!@" Well:
1. If everyone were to become gay, it'd already happen by now. Nothing stops it, time won't change it either.
2. There's other ways to reproduce humanity than a man and women fu*****.
Stop defending these morons rallying up a genocide, pathetic.

@lmbluke yes, but if everyone had children the earth would be even more over populated than what it already is. Plus, lots of people cannot have children. They are not banned from being married, or executed.
-
@lmbluke That should not be considered, lets say the Earth had a council and brought to the councils attention was the fact we might face possible over-population of the earth and its food and water resources, that almighty council might of earth might want people to not reproduce. Like eating, we eat bad stuff, empty calories that are bad for us, to get us by, no nutrition value, like saying no use for it, but we still do it..
-
@lmbluke what the hell are you talking about? what does that have to do with anything? it's a complete non seqitor!
Most of us find 2 guys kissing each other a bit disgusting, now 2 girls making out, that's just AWESOME :D. Some of us just see that it as their right, others think that it's inappropriate and use their " Holy Book " to justify their views.
There are plenty of atheists homophobes, you don't need a fictitious book to justify your irrational hatred, you don't need to justify it at all.

@AinEstonia it sounds like homophobia is related back to a culturally created sense of masculinity that some think is violated when two men love each other. wtf?
i disagree about having to justify. you should have to justify your hatred, that's what makes it rational. needless to say, it is irational to have an irational fear
