Replacement of the BMW double VANOS bearing rings with modified rings from Beisan Systems.
Under certain circumstances (usually under load at +- 2000rpm) a rattling noise can be heard from the engine; most commonly when high performance camshafts, or (in my case) a supercharger is installed. This effect is caused by axial play in the VANOS pistons. Replacing a certain component (the bearing ring) has been found to reduce this rattle.
This video shows the axial play between the VANOS piston and the camshaft helical gear set, prior to replacement of the bearing ring.

  • from where can I buy E36 m3 Euro Vanos bearings?

  • @modede30 Sorry, little late with my reply. You can buy everything here on the site beisansystems. YT won't let me post hyperlinks but you can work that out ;-)

  • Rattles could be caused by many things, but it's possible that this is your problem. Is the rattle only heard under load, or also while cruising at that rpm range? This is definitely a 'hard' amateur job, I did it twice and I am not a professional. But it does take about 4-8 hours to DIY. Finally, indeed the timing chain does not need to be replaced. M54's have accessory and air conditioning belts that do require replacement from time to time (don't know the interval, maybe every 30k miles?)

  • My car has a rattle at about 1500 - 2000 rpm . I'm assuming it has this problem . How much would it cost to fix . The rattle is louder when the engine is cold and not so bad when car is warm . Is it a hard job for a amateur or is it a job for a pro . Also do you know if

The M54 engine needs new belts . I know they have a timing chain . But the belt running everything else . Does that have a set mileage change interval . If that makes sense ?
