TROJAN REGGAE REVIVE BOX SET brings together 50 tracks of vintage reggae from the 1960s and '70s. This 3 CD set includes many hard to find recordings by pioneering artists like Junior Murvin, Boris Gardner, Theo Beckford, Drumbago and others from the legendary Trojan label.
Revive, another of Trojan's fine three-disc box sets, collects vintage Jamaican releases recorded in 1968 and 1969, many of them highly sought after and rare 7" singles done in that narrow window when rocksteady was just beginning to transform into true reggae. Among the highlights are the scampering instrumental "Revival" by Leslie Butler & the Graytones, the lovely and innocent-sounding "News Carrier" by the Hamlins, the nyahbinghi-based "Blacker Black" by the great Count Ossie, the very odd but still fascinating "Banana Water" by the Mellotones, the brilliantly choppy "Liquidator" by Tommy McCook & the Supersonics, and Winston Shand & the Sheiks edgy but soothing "Life Is But a Dream." This isn't necessarily a set for novice listeners, but veteran fans of Jamaican pop music will treasure the rarities to be found here.
