Fifty thousand people singing as one voice. If you think that 50 000 is not very many then imagine Wembley stuffed up to the roof with people (I know it has no roof, but don't interrupt me) and all of them singing in perfect harmony!. Nope, it's not like football fans yelling. It's like a giga-chorus of super-angels singing, only 1000 times louder. It feels like... black caviar is stuffed in your ears along with the sweetest honey and nicest girls, and washed down with glass of Dom Perignon and... no, I better not try to describe it because it can't really be put into words. Don't take my word for it, just come and see, and listen. How does it work? Well, for starters, we've been rehearsing for some 500 years, okay? Everybody here sings and by singing I don't mean the way you sing in the shower, but with an attitude, with exuberant passion and exquisite grace. The next thing is that we all sing in our family circles. It's a great way to prevent family conflicts. Dirty socks left on a dining table? Forgot your mother-in-law's birthday? Lingered a tad too long in the pub? Just sing an appropriate song. In Latvia, we have a song for every occasion. And if there isn't one, we'll make one up. Then several times a week we have choir rehearsals. I sang in my high school chorus (no way you could dodge out of that!), and I was pretty good at it We have men's choirs, ladies' choirs, and mixed choirs. (I like the last one best). All the choirs sing night and day to bring their singing to perfection for about 5 years, and then, on the 5th year, they all flow together for the Great Latvian Song Festival. It's like hundreds of babbling brooks streaming together to form one huge mega-river that becomes the biggest possible chorus in the Universe, (or anywhere else, for that matter.) And then they sing and dance for a whole week, competing for the honors of being voted the best chorus and best dance group. We call it the Great Song Wars, because the competition is red-hot, and the whole country holds its breath to hear the results. Riga is paralyzed at that time but nobody cares, because nobody thinks of visiting a copy-shop or their real estate agent. Visitors who find themselves in Latvia during that time are always very impressed and their eyebrows get raised without any plastic surgery whatsoever. They can't help but join the Latvians in singing, and often get the shocks of their lives when they realize they are singing quite well, even if they don't understand the words. Then they go home and try to repeat their cool singing, but...it's not the same. Why? Because you can only sing this way in Latvia. Don't ask me why. Maybe it's because of our special winds, or mushrooms we eat, or tectonic cracks that free up some special singing energy from the kernel of the Earth.
