DANIEL DERONDA (2002)

Aunque enamorada de Daniel, Gwendolen es forzada a un matrimonio opresivo con Henleigh Grandcourt (Hugh Bonneville), mientras Daniel encuentra una nueva vida a través de su amistad con Mirah Lapidoth (Jodhi Puede)
Daniel , en principio queda fascinado por Gwendolen cuando ella juega imprudentemente en la mesa de ruleta. Su familia se ha arruinado recientemente durante tiempos duros y ha fijado sus esperanzas en la orgullosa Gwendolen. Hace poco, Gwendolen de mala gana sucumbió a los requerimientos del soltero rico, Henleigh Grandcourt, y descubre que él tenía una amante, Lydia Glasher (Greta Scacchi), y tres niños.
Daniel, adoptado, piensa que su padre adoptivo es su verdadero padre con el tiempo descubrirá que es hijo de una cantante de opera de gran fama y de origen judío.
Más tarde, él salva a un cantante judía joven Mirah Lapidoth de ahogarse en el Támesis.

Finalmente, Gwendolen' se casa con Grandcourt, pero pronto descubre que él todavía se ve con su amante. Ella está atrapada en un matrimonio que es condenado antes de que haya comenzado. Ella ha enviudado cuando Grandcourt se ahoga en un accidente de barco.
Mientras tanto, Daniel emprende un viaje para encontrar su verdadera identidad y a la familia de Mirah. Esto lo lleva a la comunidad judía de Londres y Génova, donde él encuentra la Contessa (Barbara Hershey), una dama de la ópera famosa diva quién le comunica que es su verdadera madre. A su vuelta a casa descubre que su verdadero amor es Mirah y contrae matrimonio con ella..

Daniel first becomes enchanted by the beautiful Gwendolen as she gambles recklessly at the roulette table. Her family have recently fallen on hard times and pinned their hopes upon the proud, but charming Gwendolen attracting a rich husband. A short while ago, Gwendolen reluctantly succumbed to the advances of rich bachelor, Henleigh Grandcourt, only to discover that he had a mistress, Lydia Glasher (Greta Scacchi), and three children.
Danie's also been troubled. Illegitimate and haunted by doubts about his own identity, he is frustrated that his uncle and lifetime guardian, Sir Hugo Mallinger (Edward Fox), will tell him nothing about his real parents. Later, he saves a young Jewish singer Mirah Lapidoth from drowning herself in the Thames.
Eventually, Gwendolen' marries Grandcourt, but soon realises he's still seeing his mistress. She's is trapped in a marriage that is doomed before it has begun. However, she's left widowed when Grandcourt drowns in a sailing accident.
Meanwhile, Daniel embarks on a journey to find his true identity and Mirah's family. It takes him into London's Jewish community and Genoa, where he meets The Contessa (Barbara Hershey), a celebrated opera diva who holds the key to his past. It is not until he has returned home to London that the idealistic, young hero's journey of self-fulfillment reaches a powerful and dramatic conclusion.
