As one of my favorite demos, along with Second Reality, I just couldn't let Panic by Future Crew go without getting it closer to the original.

I finally managed to tweak DOSBox to get the scroller and the plasma section to work. Still not perfect, but a LOT better than before. Also able to push a 720p upscale version to maintain clarity after multiple encodings.

From the .nfo file: This demo was mainly coded by our newest member, Wildfire. The music player and the fractal routines were coded by PSI. The greetings scroller was coded by Trug. The 16 channel techno song was composed by Purple Motion. All logos and other bitmap graphics were drawn by Pixel. 3D object design by Abyss. The members of the Future Crew are:

1 GORE - Samuli Syvahuoko - Organizing/PR
2 Psi - Sami Tammilehto - Coding/music system
3 Trug - Mika Tuomi - Coding
4 Wildfire - Arto Vuori - Coding
5 Purple Motion - Jonne Valtonen - Music
6 Pixel - Mikko Iho - Graphics
7 Skaven - Peter Hajba - Music/graphics
8 Abyss - Jussi Laakkonen - BBS/object design

  • Oh, God! THIS DEMO NEEDED MORE CPU CYCLES! Some effects are lacked automatically when are not enogh CPU Cycles.

  • @GreatIdeas21 Some effects played incorrectly when I gave it more cycles; such as the vector blob section. This was the best compromise I could give it.

  • How did you tweak dosbox to run this demo well ???

  • @philipsuper The default setting are for a more advanced dos environment than is actually needed. You have to step it down to a basic VGA card. I also setup a ramdrive for the capture file.

  • @sdf0013 Download the new Tribute Album of Future Crew! Its name is "Metropolis". Because YouTuba can let you upload links, I can only send you the MediaFire ID: ivqceqtd3bwmbnp

  • I found out about demos by accident, this demo was on a magazine disk. At the time everybody round my way was into drum'n'bass music so I decided to hold a rave (not a demo party as nobody round my way had heard of demos, this was a suprise). We projected the demos onto the back wall as part of the visuals, lots of people commented on the "computer graphics" and said they'd never seen graphics like it, lots of people said it made the rave better. Panic was one of the demos we played.

  • I prefer that kind of music as many of the new demos!

  • @Magnumi Some were working for Remedy Entertainment (Max Payne), Future Mark (3DMark) etc. No wonder all those were fantastic. Look for Future Crew on wikipedia for details.

  • Nice to see that someone managed to capture it with all my VGA demo tricks still working. What you see in your monitor, is not always what you got in your framebuffer. ;-)
