This is a machine I designed to sort Skittles. I fabricated the body and many of the components out of epoxy. The funnel is a humming bird feeder, the base is wood, and the rest is PVC and old telescope parts. I used 3 servos, two are continuous rotation and one is a 180 degree swing. The microcontroller is a BASIC Stamp 2 and the RGB sensor is made by TAOS. It uses an IR LED/phototransistor circuit to detect 3 small holes on the outer edge of the disk to know where to stop each time, which puts a Skittle under the sensor, drops one in the hole, and pulls the next one out of the funnel all at the same time. The slowest part of the process is the color detection. Any faster operation results in misidentifications.
