The Barossa offers everything you'd expect from Australia's most famous wine region. Winemakers waiting to share their secrets at the cellar door; landscapes etched with manicured vineyards; passionate food producers proffering their wares at country markets; and grand chateaux surrounded by ornate gardens. And it's all just an hour from Adelaide.

The region owes much of its appeal to the European peasant farmers and English free settlers who made the place home from the 1850s. You'll get a taste of their rich cultural legacy in superb Barossa specialty foods, dozens of festivals and events, historic architecture and inspiring arts and antique galleries.

Take a winery tour in a limousine or vintage car, or float above the valley in a hot-air balloon. Wake up in the Barossa after spending the night in a restored settler's cottage, a resort suite, a luxurious country house or a shady caravan park. Sample German wursts and cakes in heritage bakeries and butcher stores as you follow the Barossa's Butcher, Baker, Winemaker Trail. And get right into the swing of things at one of the 100 events making up the biennial Barossa Vintage Festival.

  • no shit guys

there is a town out there called Stockwell

and im a decendant of the man that town was named after

  • If you really love the Barossa, then visit the 'I Love the Barossa' youtube channel!

  • I live drinking wines from here

a celebration of the Battle of Barossa in 1811

  • Oh my gosh, that is awful...I personally know not everyone there is not like that, but it really is too bad that your family was treated so poorly by a few bad apples. I come from a small town right by San Francisco, and I know a a lot of snobby people who have nothing better to do with their time than gossip...

  • While I'll admit I said it in an extremely furious tone, I'm not exaggerating. Everything I said was true. Our family left because my mother was on the verge of a nervous breakdown from being shunned and gossiped about.

  • Why are you so angry? It sounds as if you were actually run out of town by a sadistic gang of baseball bat-wielding Barossa locals all because you *weren't* local?? This all sounds very personal. If that really did happen that truly sucks and I'm sorry it happened, but aren't you exaggerating a little bit?

  • Dude, If you can't say anything nice don't say anything at all. I used to live in Angaston and what you said about them is far from the truth. I found the community warm and welcoming. And NO I DID NOT COME FROM THERE ORIGINALLY. I went to high school there only.

  • "im getting a hint you aren't a local..."

    -this guy

Of course I'm not a local! That's exactly what I'm on about! If you're not born and bred there, the residents shun you, they treat you as an outsider, like scum.

  • what the hell are you on, i personally live in the Barossa and its great compared to all the other city towns that are just full of traffic, i havent seen any homeless people around where i live. im getting a hint you aren't a local...

  • The Barossa SUCKS! They're a close-knit gossiping bunch of assholes. If you're not one of them, you're not welcome. They will lie about you, spread rumors and shun you. Unless you like wine, there is no reason to go there. Beautiful countryside? Pssh. Only if you like dead grass and dirt. Did I mention the drug and homeless problems? I've found many a pill on the local bus, and they have programs in schools telling you how to help the homeless. There is more I could say, but the count is out.
