Idiot Box Ep 9: Smash VS. Glee - Is NBC's New Broadway Series Smash better than Glee?

In SideReel's new TV commentary webseries, Idiot Box, TV addicts Sungmi and Kyle duke out which musical TV series takes the cake: FOX's well-established hit series Glee or NBC's new Broadway-themed Smash? Can Smash measure up to Glee or will it stand alone? Smash premieres on NBC February 6, 2012.

Transcript:
Sungmi: Welcome to Idiot Box! Today we're going to talk about Smash, a new show on NBC that features singing, dancing, performing... sounds to me a lot like Glee. Do you think that the Gleeks should be tuning in?

Kyle: I definitely think Gleeks should be tuning in. I think Smash is actually a far superior show. I was on board the Glee train, you know like probably three seasons ago, but I feel like it has really fallen off in sort of terms of quality. It now has very campy sort of guest star appearances, like very showy names... I feel like there's also this like weird business model that is basically like compelling you to go to iTunes and buy the soundtrack of the week. Um, and I feel like Smash is like a very adult, you know, like the next step in sort of that genre. It features original songs, it features Katharine McPhee in an amazing, stellar sort of lead role. I think, you know that Smash is something that Glee fans should totally tune in for and continue to watch.

Sungmi: Yeah, I don't know, I don't know if it's like a natural progression for Glee fans. I think that the fun of Glee is the silliness, the campy-ness, you know? You kind of have to be into this world where these crazy performances happen, and I think that's the fun of it. And I don't think that Smash is as strong as you're saying.

Kyle: I think everyone, everyone has to grow up, Sungmi, and like sometimes...

Sungmi: I don't want to grow up!

Kyle: Well, regardless of you, Peter Pan. You know, sometimes you need to follow your heart, follow your dreams to Broadway...

Sungmi: I think you've been watching too much Smash because... I think that it's more fun to watch someone like being ridiculous in a high school hallway than it is seeing someone singing down the street...

Kyle: Than to deal with the real world?

Sungmi: Exactly, exactly.

The only thing that Smash and Glee have in common is that they're both musicals. THATS IT!! I think is pretty stupid to try to compare these two shows beyond that. Ones a comedy (Glee) and the other is a drama (Smash). I find it silly to try to put these shows up against each other because, other than both being musicals, they have nothing in common.

Oh and by the way....I find it funny that people are choosing sides. LOL!!! Why can't you like both shows???

Smash is better than glee! Glee is only high school musical all over again and they are just singing popular songs from hit artists and their own they create. Smash is a storyline between two difference people who have different voices and the producers are trying to find their Marilyn Monroe and but stuck between with the two women that have amazing talent and they are trying to get the musical on broadway.!:)

Corey Montieth is almost thirty, just saying. I am a hardcore, and I loved it. But everything has to come to an end. SMASH is really amazing, and in it's own right SMASH is very inspiring. Not everyone in my high school breaks out in musicals, but everyone has a dream. Glee is coming to an end. I for one am thanjful I still have a musical to watch.

@chesneth1 I'm not sure what you mean when you say the people on Smash are old. Katherine McPhee is younger than some of the kids on Glee. Plus Smash promotes some of the same themes as Glee. You mentioned fighting for your dreams. Karen and Ivy are certainly fighting for what they want. And Karen portrays the underdog on this show, just like the Glee kids. I know Smash may never be as great as Glee in your eyes, but if you like musical theatre and performing drama then why not give it a try?

As people have said before, the two shows are completely different animals. One is about the creation of a new broadway show and the other is about high school kids trying to win a show choir competition. They both have some fantastic singers and performers. I think that most of the people who enjoy glee will really like Smash. I hate how the media is setting them up against each other. Watch both shows, its not like they're in the same time slot.

I agree with him. I loved Glee, but the quality really has gone down. The acting in Smash is MUCH better. They are different, but you can compare two different things. I feel like Glee is somewhat unintelligent like most American TV, but Smash is much more intelligent. I'm tired of watching terrible acting on American television, I'm ready for Smash!

I actually like Smash, but if we're comparing it to Glee it has no chance. Smash came no where near the same hype in it's pilot created in Glee's pilot. But I will still tune in to both. Why does there have to be this same trivial "which one is better" and just point out that both are giving an honest, positive light to people who pursue the arts as well as giving a much needed spark of interest in musicals.

Personally, I like Smash better, but I don't think these shows should be compared. They don't seem very alike to me, besides being musicals.
