Guatemala: MI FUTURO EN MIS PRIMEROS CENTIMETROS

Todos los niños y niñas pueden crecer de manera similar en los primeros años de vida. La diferencia se da por el afecto, la alimentación saludable, la atención médica y el cuidado que le brinden sus familias. En Guatemala, uno de cada dos niños esta crónicamente desnutrido; sobre todo en las zonas rurales del país y en poblaciones indígenas. Un estándar mínimo para comunicar el tema de la destrucción crónica a la población es que todos los niños y niñas deben lograr por lo menos 70 cm en el primer año, y 80 cm en el segundo año. Para reducir la pobreza en Guatemala es esencial disminuir la desnutrición infantil y así potenciar las capacidades de la población del país en el futuro. Sabe usted cómo está creciendo su hijo?

The World Bank is right about pointing to the need for pre and post natal monitoring of a child's growth as an important measure. I am disappointed however to sense an effort to blame ignorance as the source of malnutrition. No amount of monitoring can help put food on the table of millions of rural Guatemalans for whom the political system continues to fail. To reduce malnutrition is important to change the systemic economic injustice that colonial times and the cold war have left behind
