Yes, you can use it for scaling up, or down on ANY surface - even walls, a canvas, paper. Go as big as you want or use it to scale down i.e. take a big image and scale it smaller. It is the most accurate way of transferring an image without tracing it.
I grid up the eyes, nose and mouth on EVERY portrait I do, to get it accurate, then freestyle the rest.
