Abba - Under Attack (for Marielle - Fridnetha)

This video is for my good friend Marielle who lives in Manila. Marielle is a great Abba fan as you can see from her channel "fridnetha". She has been doing videos for their music since early 2007, and has done extremely well for someone so young. You may have seen the terrible floods that have just occurred in the last few days in Manila. I will be sending her my donation, and I hope that we can help Marielle and her family to recover from these devastating floods. Here is Marielle's own words on how these floods have suddenly affected her life.
Hello Uncle John..
Heavy rain came again last night here. Sad to say, our area reached the flood. Our appliances was damaged and no one is functioning. My books and school supplies also get drowned, and also my school uniform, and my shoes also. And also my ABBA collections. I dont know what to do, all I did is to cry and cry. Nothing left..right now, we're here in internet shop. I told it to you Uncle cos i know you may help me. Please help me, cos my mother has nothing already right now due to the storm. Never thought it would happen to us, cos last Sunday, the flood did not reach us. But yesterday, it happend suddenly. Hoping for your help uncle. I dont have father so i tried to approach you. Thank GODBLESS

This performance of Under Attack is from the popular German tv program Show Express broadcast live from Saarlandhalle, Saarbrucken at 7.30pm on November 11 1982. At the end of the show all the guests took a bow one by one with ABBA bringing up the rear - they were then mobbed by the audience! Under Attack was recorded on August 2 1982 at Polar Studios Stockholm. This was Abba's 28th and last single being released on December 3 1982 in UK and on February 21 1983 elsewhere. It was later added as a bonus track to the cd release of Abba's last album "The Visitors". Under Attack was not a commercial success making only #26 in UK and #96 in Australia, and the top 5 in Belgium and Holland only.

Benny's comments: "Under Attack is a wonderful recording, and it has a lot of nice little elements within it, like a bass synth line that I worked on forever. Some people have suggested that there is a lack of warmth in this song, partly because of the way the vocals are treated and because things were moving to digital from analogue. But we had been working with digital technology for a while, and the Vocoder we used to treat the vocals was just for fun."
Bjorn's comments: "The sound of the vocals of Under Attack is very much of the 1980's, that Buggles "Video Killed The Radio Star" style. But the melody of the chorus is much more 1960's, even 1950's. And the counter-melody is very effective. I think its a really good recording and had it been released a year earlier it would have been a number one. I wasn't feeling under attack personally. The title was just a good hook and dictated the rest of the lyric. I think it was very much the craftsman at work."

Many thanks Isabelle, its good that we can use our common love of Abba to help one of our young friends at a critical time. I know Marielle has now received some of the assistance sent by the Abba community, and things are starting to get back to normal for her at home and at school. My grateful thanks to everyone concerned - I'm proud of you all too! We couldn't have done it without Abba and great songs like this though!
