Beginning at the site of worlds greatest cataclysm, which created the natural landscape and geology of the Reef, Johnny Clegg follows that elusive thread of gold, and the manmade landscape it has created in its wake, to discover the diverse ways in which artists have imagined and responded to it. On his journey Johnny meets artists Marcus Neustetter, Willem Boshoff, Sam Nhlengethwa, David Goldblatt, Hugh Masekela and Jo Ractliffe. He also ventures down the worlds deepest gold mine; samples age-old distilled beverages, and revisits memories of his childhood growing up on the reef.

  • 3:20 He wants to know where the golden thread is leading?

"The deposits led away northwards, and down into darkness . . . the Dwarves delved too greedily and too deep."

Get out while you still can!

  • This really awesome. But heres the catch you must pay and if its really deep like this it cost alot. But I wouldn't mined to be a hard rock miner here in Colorado or in Nevada. But Colorado has alot of mines, its like 1 mine/every 4.5^2 miles and we have over 20,000 not unless 30,000 mines.

  • @kurtis625 Dig this !!!!

  • @kurtis625 We are now down to about 4,000 meters, that is about two and a half miles !

  • @kurtis625. Metres ,in other words about 2 miles !

  • The scale of the whole operation is awe inspiring.... You may not realise from the video, but the main cages (or elevators) you go down the mine in, have 5 decks each and carry 40 people on each = 200 people a go. I enjoyed every minute of the 11 years I worked in the mines there.

  • How many indigenous people have been made wealthy by this mine? Afrikaners are animals!

  • @Blue2Scripter your a chode

  • man im scared im gunna be a driller n im only 19 allready set for the common core its in july and im allready working at a mine as a labor pumping water for them so they can to the bed rock then make a high high road and make a huge damn but man just thinking like going that deep kinda scary like if a plate moves where you are or near your done and so is everyone there underground but gold + in the markets and thats a bonus and they can afford to be safer then everyone else
