  • mr miller's atheist genes kicked in. he left just enough wriggle room for a rational explanation i.e. prof p was sleep-walking and tossed the bed himself while having a nightmare. no such ambiguity in the original. the moral (arrogance of certainty) gets a bit watered down as a result. still though, beautifully acted by hordern and lovingly produced. thanks so much for uploading.

  • Er.. Watching this whilst eating cheese sandwiches just before bed was probably not the best of ideas :|

  • interesting point. actually, i'm an atheist and i love ghost stories. my point was that in the original james story there is an unequivocal supernatural event in that hotel room. miller equivocates, i would suspect because he couldn't bear to lend credence to the supernatural. i'm not saying he was wrong. as a sceptic i prefer it that way, it's just not in the spirit of the original. i totally respect his right make his own interpretation and your right to draw incorrect conclusions about what

You seem to be under the impression that it is impossible for an atheist to fully admire a ghost story. Well, that's nonsense. Let's take another genre-Science Fiction...I do not "believe" it is possible to travel faster than the 'speed of light' does that mean I must qualify my enjoyment of Ursula K Le Guin, Frank Herbert etc?

Escapism, at some level, is the route of all fiction.

Respectfully yours- a skeptical lover of ghost stories.

  • Over rational intellectuals - they don't like it up 'em.

  • I read this story. In it the person who opens the door in the nick of time sees the sheets moving and he threws the whistle to the sea.

  • This movie is so creepy. There is so much tension in this last part that something so small as the moment at 1:54 made me jump.

  • Everything he "knows" to be true has been shattered.

  • Just about one of the best ghost stories ever written.

  • oops! post a comment when i meant to do a search. my bad, disregard!

  • @TheBrokenreed You really nailed it. For me, this in an improvement upon MR's story, although I can see how some may have a problem with this adaptation.
