  • I work for BNSF and have run through here many times..What happened here for those who dont know...the crew on the LKAN0081 was switching cars in this location prior to this accident. They are supposed to line the switch back for main line movement, and report it to the dispatcher, they reported it lined for main track movement but didnt line it back. The train you are watching this video from is an 18,000+ ton coal train traveling around 45 mph, there wouldnt be any stopping in a short distance

  • The points *should* have been set for the main line. By the time the crew would have noticed that this wasn't the case, the best brakes in the world wouldn't have stopped you. The train would probably have been in full emergency at the point of impact.

  • Lol

  • DON'T ERROR

  • @good2bseen You may want to check out the 'Live Train Crash!!! STUPID!' site. There is a person - 'MachetePanda' - who has called you "freaking retarded". Several of us have tried to correct him, but he just doesn't want to listen - or learn. Perhaps he will listen to you.

  • Yeah its dark territory. I transferred out there bout a month after this happened.

  • @good2bseen So was this dark territory? I can't imagine getting a clear block into this. I used to be an engineer and this is one theings I worried about most as I had about 60 miles of main line dark territory. I know there is just no way to stop by the time you saw something like that. They give you a warrant and you are supposed to just go and hope for the best.

  • @sha1om trailing tonnage is exactly as you thought. Weight of the train without factoring in the weight of operating power. Locomotives vary in weight but you are close.

  • The text in the FRA report says the train was 6,918 tons, but the summary at the head says 16,918 tons. One or the other has to be wrong...

I wonder, does "trailing tons" mean the weight of the train exclusive of the locomotives? Because if so you have to add another couple hundred tons for them.

  • I wonder if I should post the Southern Railway Saluda Mountain training video I have. I can see him now, "5.1% grade? You can't get a train down that."

  • @gebass6 Sounds sort of depressing. LOL. I can see him now just sitting there and shaking his head. LOL
