Crime pays for Somalia's pirates - 9 Oct 08

Somali pirates are demanding an $8m ransom for the release of a Ukrainian ship they are holding off the coast off their country's northern coast.

The pirates appear to rule the seas around Somalia with impunity, while towns in Somalia's Puntland region have become the hub for many of their activities.

Al Jazeera's Mohammed Adow sent this exclusive report.

(cont) Moreover, the Somali Islamic Courts Union (ICU) actually took control of the seas when they were in power (mid to late 2006) where Somalia saw it's first peace in 15 years at the time. Then the U.S. via the CIA (check the NYtimes) tried to topple them via proxy warlords killing hundreds of innocents. When that failed they funded, armed and physically helped the Ethiopian Gov't to invade Somalia causing untold thousands & the most death & displacement ever.

I hope they never stop, what the world especially usa and western has done to somalia is a disgrace. I support the somalis 110 %. It`s not piracy or terrorism to protect your own country and water from looters, toxic wasters, fish looters etc. They want somali to be in anarchy, just look when the islamic courts took the country and try to put some rules. Well atleast we are doing something now. Farole announced 2400 troops from Puntland to serve as Sea Corps and they are building 8 bases along the coast which will house 600 and will be the centres for communication, the rest will be in the middle of those bases and on sea. Also they are connecting the bases by road. Eyl is being levelled to the ground, literally.
