Danmarks Frihedssang (The Liberation Song of Denmark) was secret written and composed by unknown famous Danes in early 1945. The text and song was secret distribuated from person to person all over Denmark during the last 2-3 months of the German occupation, so everybody was ready to sing it in public at the long expected Liberation. From the Danish broadcast from BBC, the German surrender in Holland, North-West Germany and Denmark was announced in mid evening on May 4th 1945. Right away all Denmark started to celebrate their Liberation from the German tyrrany. the German surrender was official from Saturday morming on May 5th 1945.
This recording was made in summer 1945 with the Orchestra of The Royal Theatre in Copenhagen. The singer Flemming Jacobsen and the mens choir were from The Danish Brigade. The Danish Brigade was established in Sweden during 1943-44 by escaped Danish menbers of the Danish Resistance, and trained in Sweden, ready to march into Denmark, if the Germans started an open fight just before the surrender in WW2. Unfortunately only the Western part of Denmark was liberated by Montgomery. The Island of Bornholm in the Baltic Sea, was during the Jalta Conference in February 1945 placed in the Soviet zone of Europe. The Germans denied to surrender to the Soviet Union, and the towns of Rønne and Nexø was badly devastated by Soviet air raids on May 6-7th 1945, at the very same time when the rest of Denmark was celebrating the Liberation and the arrival of the first British troops. First in summer 1946 the Red Army left the island of Bornholm!

Thank you for posting this....what that generation lived through! it reminded me of my visit to the Freedom Museum in Copenhagen long ago.
