  • Caroline, I am mega impressed with this whole tutorial. It is a stunning picture and what wonderful textures you have achieved. I am just getting started in this kind of work. I had no idea you could "pipe" the joint compound like that! I am lost in admiration. Look forward to seeing more videos from you, and also watch with interest the ongoing development of your website. You have really inspired me. Thank you so much!

  • @shoshiplatypus Thank you for such a lovely comment. The lightweight compound is so easy to press through a clay extruder. Keep in mind that it is also very delicate, even when dried. So use caution when applying the polymer matte medium over the dry compound roots. After several coats, it will be more forgiving & ready to paint. It just takes time to dry. I have had to wait for days for all of the layers to completely dry before painting. It can get really humid here on the eastcoast.

  • I really enjoyed waching the series of tutorials for this wonderful artwork. I've read above that you've also created some artwork using gourds and cant wait to check that out as well. I'm looking forward to seeing more videos soon and wishing you many more terrific art making days :)

  • @lovinmanhattan Thanks for the comment. It is nice to hear from you. Hope all is well. You can see some gourd work on my website which also links to my other sites. I have also recently released a new printable pdf tutorial on texture and other techniques that I think you will really enjoy. See the link on my channel.

  • Love this tutorial. Nice painting. I really love your gourd art too. I Would love to see some tutorials of you working with the gourds. It's amazing what you can do with an ugly gourd. The polymer clay peacock is beautiful. It looks like carved stone and the stain gives it an almost aged look. What kind of stain did you use?

  • @CFJernigan Thanks for the advice, Caroline! One thing I am learning about mixed media work is patience!! Everything takes ages to dry... I think the answer is probably to have several projects on the go at once so you can work on one while another is drying. It can be quite humid here in the SW of the UK, too, but probably not so hot! Thank you for replying to all my comments.

  • Thanks Carla. I also work with polymer clay.1 of the main techniques used is "staining" where the entire piece or sections are painted (black or neutral color) then wiped off with a wet cloth. There are so many techniques that we artist can transfer from one medium to another and discover an entire new direction to explore. Here I simply attach the work to a substrate verses it being a sculpture. Please check out my web site for polymer art and see the peacock vessel. Love your work too.
