Trails of Africa at the Birmingham Zoo. The Birmingham Zoo is embarking on a bold new initiative, one that is intended to set new benchmarks for the care and breeding of elephants in the United States. Visitors will experience, explore, and become educated on the new and existing animals and their expanded exhibit areas.

  • when i went there lat year in august they were saying that they were getting elephants and other new stuff but when i went they were doing a thing about the lions and the lady said that just becareful he might' right when she said that he sprayed us i think lions are related to skunks

  • i just went 2day they r getting new things

but the fennece fox is gone:( they got ponies though in the petting zoo

  • Its been a while since I've worked there, and the specifics are always changing. But the plan is to be an overall African area. I can't say who will be where, but originaly many species were planed to be included in the area. It is intented to be pretty big.

  • Good to hear. Will they also be moving the other African animals (those closer to the predator building, like the giraffes and lions), or will the new area be reserved for the elephants?

  • Yes, the old building will no longer be used for elephants, rhinos or hippos. The new area will replace that and then some.

  • I still remember Mona and Suzie. Are they replacing the old elephant/rhino/hippo building with this Trails to Africa thing?

  • Nice video. I can't wait until it's finally done. :) I'm probably going tomorrow. :D

Other than that, I can't wait to start volunteering there. I love animals. :)
