The federal hate crimes bill was reintroduced Wednesday by Rep. Sheila Jackson-Lee. It is now titled The David Ray Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2009, H.R. 256, and is a condensed version of the longer Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act, H.R. 1592 (which failed to gain final approval from Congress last year). Jackson-Lee also submitted a new companion bill, The David Ray Richardson Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2009, H.R. 262. This bill will permit federal involvement in states to "prevent" hate crimes and assist hate crimes victims.

Both bills will authorize unprecedented intervention in states rights. H.R. 256 is the most dangerous. It will transform America into a national hate crimes bureaucracy and end free speech, as has happened in Canada.

  • this is just total bullshit, i have a right to freedom of speech and all i'm hearing from this bill is that if i make someone "different" angry he will say i insulted him and then i will go to jail, this is just a huge assload of bullshit. i know they get picked on, but why doesn't this bill include whites or christains? i know the democrats are all hippies but this is just too much. i just hope once congress sees what they have done, they will get rid of it.

  • It's an agenda - once you can see that, you'll understand. Best wishes!

  • too late it just passed !!!!!!!!!

  • Okay, I just called that number and got transferred. I was put on hold and spoke with an operator that took my zip code. I just said, "please do not vote for any hate crime legislation. H.R. 256 and H.R. 262. I think it is theft against our freedom of speech. I am Afro-American and I do not agree with what the KKK says but, I defend their right of free speech to say it. Thank You"

She told me she would tell him.

  • @assman255 I have a gay friend who is a paramedic. Apparently, there are several other gay guys working there as well. One day, a new person was hired, and he made several homophobic jokes or statements on the job, not realizing that he had several gay co-workers. My friend said the boss, who he describes as being quite conservative, threatened to fire that guy if he made any jokes or statements like that again. While not criminal, the new guy's speech carried consequences.

  • @assman255 Check out the recent Supreme Court decision Snyder v. Phelps. If the Westboro Baptist Church has a right to spread their message, then so do you, provided it's not a specific threat or something like that. However, just because you have the right to basically say whatever you want doesn't mean that your speech will be free of consequences.

  • @scottiebobson over 2 mill people in prison many due to bureaucratic bullshit so just because u havn't experienced a problem doesn't mean others haven't spoke something that landed them a fine or prison. I got arrested, strangled by cops, they said in court I called one of them a dumb as nigger, I didn't, I called them corrupt nazi's after they screamed at me "your not a free american citizen, you don't have the freedom of speech, you can't say and do what you want in this country, do u comply?"

  • Is this a bureaucracy where they apove a apointed board to make up rules and regulations that are enforced by law unconstitutionally? or is it just a dirrect law?

  • @camelloops What the fuck does hate have to do with a defense bill?

  • I love how every time i ask how this threatens freedom of speech I never get a straight answer....Leave your religious beliefs OUT of Government. Its only the Religious right that didn't like this bill. Its as simple as this....If you don't like someone because they are gay, or you don't like what color they are...Keep you mouth shut...No one cares what you ignorant racist want anyway.

  • I live in the Northern United States. We've had equivalent laws at the state level for years, and nothing has changed.

  • I'm not understanding your objection to what I said. A hate crime is pushed for by prosecution, not defense lawyers.
