I wanted to get these cadences on video before I forgot how to play them. Otherwise, how could I prove I ever knew them? They're bits of cadences that I learned between 1972 and 1975 as a member of the John Marshall High School and then West Virginia University marching bands.

I threw this video together one evening, with a little bit of intro as to what I was playing. To expand on that a bit, the first cadence segment (I ran all three together) was the cadence I learned my first week at band camp at John Marshall High School in Glen Dale, WV, in 1972.

The second segment was taught to us the next year by Gregg Steele, who learned it his freshman year at the University of Kentucky. This was the toughest by far to learn.

The third segment was part of the WVU drumline's routine in 1975. It was the easiest to learn, but it does have the cool toss and salute at the end of each phrase.

I used to be able to nail these pieces, but that was a long time ago and I'm way out of practice. The last time I'd even tried to play these was over two years ago, at WVU's homecoming with the Alumni Band.

So enjoy watching the old dude test his chops. All you young!sters will be here someday!
