There are composers and there are guitar composers. Main stream composers who do not know the guitar inside out will not be able to compose very well. Barrios is an excellent composer and literally knows the guitar and everything about, inside out.

True, and then you have arrangers who are able to take compositions written for piano and violin for example and adapt those to guitar quite well. Sor's Variations on a Theme by Mozart is one example. Also, guitarists are given creative freedom to improvise and interpret so in the final analysis, I'm not so sure there is a difference. One exception might be Terrega's Gran Jota where the guitar mimics a snare drum, harp, etc. One thing certain though, is that Barrios was a gifted composer.

what about say.. de falla's Pour le tombeau de Claude Debussy? easily one of the most important guitar pieces ever written whilst you cannot say he is a guitar composer because he never wrote any other works for the guitar (to my knowledge anyway)

The reason why composers who arent guitarists rarely write guitar works is because they bring them less recognition and the guitar is often not considered a " concert instrument" (yeah, i know.. as if its not :P)

and of course, nocturnal. I think one of the cornerstones of the whole rep. But yah it's a pity about the recognition. It's up to people like you and me bro!
