The judges had this closer than what I had it. I would agree it was a fairly close fight but Holyfield consistently outboxed Mercer just enough in every round to win every round in my books. Mercer's best round was R8, when he led through most of it until Holyfield knocked him down to turn it round. For Mercer to react the way he did after the fight, shows he needed to look at the fight tape.

Holyfield would almost never raise his arms at the end of a fight, even when he clearly won in a hard fought battle like this one. Classy guy.

I had it 96-93. Amazingly close fight up until the moment that ring doctor made Holyfield focus.

Amazing the difference a punch or 2 can make! Mercer would've won the round and had a chance to eek out a decision... but a huge knockdown and pressure from Holyfield late gives him the solid and deserved decision. Mercer is very strong but only comes on on occasion when he's pumped up, other times he throws quick little arm punches that are largely ineffective. Mercer's jabs are surprisingly good but not that accurate. His carrying on after the decision is a little embarrassing too!
