In this tutorial DJ Endo, Traktor Pro guru, Native Instruments product specialist and Dubspot Instructor will discuss how to prepare your tracks in Traktor using beat grids. Beat grids will allow you to use Traktor's 'synch' function to create seamless dj mixes that are always perfectly in time. In following videos in this series Endo will discuss other Traktor tips including harmonic mixing, load markers, interface mapping and much more.

  • This tutorial is confusing me because of how some of your methods differ with Ean Golden's. For example: In your video you set the cue point as the "first beat" which is the kick. In Ean's vid he uses the snare as it's cue point and set the beat grid from there. He explains that it is more reliable way of matching the grid as opposed to using the first beat. Lol whose right? =/

  • @helixzzz both will work but I would recommend using the kick. The kick is usually the first beat in the pattern.

  • i watched sooo many vids on beat gridding and couldnt get my head around it. i think ive got it afte watching this vid. thanks man, you explain it easy

  • @DeeJayEndo I understand what you're saying now, but I still don't really know what you mean by metronome grooving, I thought the metronome is supposed to allign with the kicks...and I listen to melodic trance, not much groove in there

  • @Andreilg3 I never said to listen to the kicks. I said to place the Grid Marker on the first kick. This is good because it serves as a good cue point. Once you have the grid marker set on the first kick, listen to the rest of the track and the groove with the metronome (kicks, snares, hats etc) and make sure the metronome is grooving with the track. If the snare's are out of phase or melodies, just shift the grid until it is beatmatched with everything as a whole and sounds best. Following me?

  • hey mate thankyou much appreciate the video on beat gridding a lot of tutorials do explain how to use traktor pro but i always have question to ask as it hasnt explained it in the way i need to know you however have just answred my prayers thankyou so much........................ ian ;-)

  • @DeeJayEndo I understand what you are saying but honestly doing it by ear just sounds like do it based off where the kicks "click" right than the actual spot of the song everything should be in, I am not trying to argue but if I have two kicks that click at different points wouldn't that mean that everything is shifted? meaning the stabs, melodies, etc.. are all of out of phase..., yea the kicks might be better but its not just about the kicks is it?

  • @Andreilg3 Thats like saying that because the waveforms are lined up in serato the beats are perfectly matched. Listen I won't argue with you, I do this for a living. Trust me, doing it by ear is the right way to get your beatgrids 100% accurate. After a while you start to develop an ear for it and all of your grids will be 100% accurate. If you rely on the waveform your metronome won't match up with the groove of the record sometimes and your syncing won't work correctly.

  • @DeeJayEndo why would I do it by ear when I can't hear the difference between a .01 difference in bpm while my vision can, what I do is I just grid on the first kick (the moment i see any actual waveform being formed) and I make sure that it is identical throughout the entire track, the only flaw I see in my system is kick cancelling while your way won't have the tracks in sync

  • @brixius111 Check out my latest tutorial on how to do exactly that - Video Tutorial: Using Traktor + Ableton to Beat Grid Disco, Live Drums (Unquantized Tracks) - on the Dubspot Youtube

  • @marceloneri Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the tutorial. More coming soon!

  • @DjBurgess08 Yup this is an older version of Traktor. The concepts are still the same in this version though except the metronome is the headphones icon in the grid panel now. - Endo
