From Syria, singer Omar Souleyman sang in Detroit the night of Saturday, July 9, 2011, at MOCAD, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Detroit. Crowd was mostly white and non-Arab. There was no dabke dancing. He sang against a green-light backdrop with 1 man playing a electronic synth machine that provided beats and keyboard sounds.
Crowd enjoyed the show. Lots of dancing and clapping. He wore a white Middle Eastern robe and headdress. Omar was calm most of the show, strolling the stage with his sunglasses always on. He would clap and extend his hands to the crowd, the top half gesturing forward to the beat of the rhythm. In the back were 3 big industrial-size fans to cool down the room.
