I love this, her voice has so much pain inside it. It's always like a bunch of colours and the lyrics are like shapes. I always feel like seeing a wonderful painting when listening to her.

Although the original was religious (and the lyrics still reflect it) there's a huge element of love and loss in the song, notably in Buckley's. It's not just about faith and God, it's about pain and love too.

A list of mentioned covers:
Kate Voegle: heavy on acoustic and vocals
Rufus Wainwright: rushes past (piano ends on an awesome rumbling bass note)
KD Lang: sways like a ghost
John Cale: elegant, orchestral band may distract
Regina Spektor: sparse accompaniment makes vocals lonelier
Leonard Cohen: original author, quite groovy
Jeff Buckley: infinitely gentle, except for an odd strangled outburst near the end

Regina is an amazing writer and although the cover of this song may not be the best one out there, it certainly brings emotion and makes you feel the song. The picture at 2:01 is just absolutely stunning. Regina = <3
