Alright, if you don't know what selling is you NEED to GTFO. Also, if you think the game does the selling for you, you NEED to GTFO. Get the picture I'm trying to paint for you? AOW isn't about winning or losing, it is about putting out the best product we can with the tools that the WWE has given us. But at the end of the day, the most useful tool we have in AOW is YOU. That's right, I called you a tool, get over it. Selling is what makes the world go round, it is what separates us from every other jerk off out there who's spamming and glitching. Hell, it's what separates us from all of those fair play leagues out there.
We are a promotion that is dedicated to the art of telling a story in the styling of our favorite promotions in the world. Whether or not you like it, professional wrestling is based around selling. You're a wrestling purist? Guess what, it's still selling. You CAN NOT look good unless your oppnent LETS you look good. You can spam your run attacks and grapples all match, dominate your opponent all you want, but guess what? At the end of the day you just look like a try-hard loser who is trying to prove something to themselves by beating people in an online game in a manner in which it WASN'T mean to be played. You're playing a professional wrestling game, it's time to THINK like a professional wrestler.
CAW originallity and realism are one thing, but if you play like a douche bag none of that matters. All people will remember you as is that douche bag with a nice caw, that COULD have been great had it actually hadn't come off like a jackass. So guess what, this thread is here to help you learn how to sell. What is selling you ask? Selling isn't JUST staying down when you've been hit. Selling isn't JUST acting like a move actually just hurts. Selling is making sure your opponents offense looks as strong as it possibly can. Selling is helping your opponent set up moves so they come off looking crisp and beautiful.
At the end of the day, selling isn't simply just a neccesity in professional wrestling -- it as an ART. Almost every single aspect of professional wrestling is built around Selling, and to play here in AOW you need to make sure you're observing these aspects. Here are some points we'd like to hammer home with you.
Making your opponent look good is paramount to your opponent making YOU look good. Simple philosophy. You scratch my back, I scratch your back.
Spots! Spots! Spots! You should have them, your opponent should have them, you should both be selling them. This doesn't mean let your opponent hit his spots all the time, but if the person has momentum let him do it! But also, know when you can turn the tables. This leads into the next point.
Know when to reverse! Some times your opponent will give you hints when they want to reverse, some times they don't think about it. But try to figure out when it's correct to reverse.
Cater to your opponents strengths and weaknesses. Lets say you're a small guy, and you're fighting a big guy. You should probably tweak your move-set to reflect you're fighting a big guy, and you shouldn't be manhandling him. Sell that his a big powerful guy, put him over. This isn't to say lose simply because you're smaller, but sell the fact that they have a significant advantage over you. The same with lets say you're a brawler and you're fighting a highly-trained grappler. You maybe able to outstrike them, but when it comes to the wrestling game sell the fact that they're a damn good wrestler.
Watch matches! I could sit here all day and tell you what to do, and what not to do, but at the end of the day you need to have a feel for your own character as well as a standard knowledge of how a wrestling match is performed.
Talk can be cheap, and if you think THIS talk is cheap -- once more, GTFO. But just in case these words of wisdom don't help we've got you some faaannnccyy videos made by our very own ( and very talented ) Nic Virtue, to help hammer this issue home. Enjoy! And remember, don't hesitate to ask for help if you need it.
