Recently this song (Kolob) has been haunting me... it's been in my head, in my dreams, in my life... most recently appearing with the folk tune it's set to in a Loreena McKennitt track I just discovered called The Seven Rejoices of Mary.
For a while now I've been thinking about putting it together with Tubular Bells, thanks to a brainwave from my friends' brother. This is how it came together when I decided to improvise it tonight. Folk tunes, deep doctrine and "creepier" pieces seem to be able to fit together.
It would be better if I had a real acoustic piano to play it on, but I just have to make do!
(Tubular Bells comes in at around 5:00)

  • Sounds great. Is that "Star of the County Down" lurking within this piece?

  • @Finarphin Thank-you! Well it's techinically based on Vaughan Williams's arrangement of Kingsfold (Five Variants of Dives and Lazarus) which is basically the same melody as that song, so yeah! :D

  • Actually, this is not the original tune that W. W. Phelps wrote the words to. You will find that tune in the earlier hymnals of the Church. This melody is by Ralph (pronounced Rafe - I don't know why; it's British) Vaughn-Williams.

  • @ihatethishackercrap Yes I am aware of the tune in the original hymn book. I'm also aware of how to pronounce Ralph Vaugh-Williams's name. The melody in the new hymnal is a traditonal melody arranged by Vaughn-Williams.

  • I stumbled across this looking for other versions of Seven Rejoices (my mind was completely blown to hear Loreena singing the melody of my very favorite hymn). Not a bad way to end a night. That last minute is just stellar. Much approval and many gold stars for you, talented and skilled Brother-stranger. :)

  • Thank-you very much! You're so kind! :)

Yesssss, my mind too was blown when I heard that tune on a Loreena McKennitt record! :D

  • @ihatethishackercrap What's this got to do with anything?

  • @TheJoshmire - The only reason I can think of why it would be is because the tune comes from a traditional carol "Five Variants of Dives and Lazarus." I must say though that W.W. Phelps did the tune justice in making "If you could hie to Kolob."

  • Thank-you, Jenni! ♥
