GMTV/Meridian Opt out problem - 24/08/07

On 24/08/07 at around 8am, Meridian opted out of GMTV to a blank screen (they would normally opt out for the regional news at around 8:10am). The blank screen was on air for about a minute. Someone or something must have realised the problem because although Meridian was still opted out they broadcast a feed of GMTV (you can tell Meridian was still opted out and rebroadcasting GMTV because the feed was in 14:9 instead of the normal 16:9.)

This is the point where this video clip starts from. Not knowing their feed was on air, Meridian cut to the news studio which had a still picture of a wall selected. The presenter almost realised he was on air as the monitors in the studio which are probably used to show GMTV were showing him in delay (probably an off air feed?)

Meridian opted back in to GMTV and a minute or two later opted out again for the regional news as if nothing had happened.

I'm not sure what happened in other regions. Please add a comment if you know.

why is Meridian's news called GMTV NEWS??? Do any other regions do this?

Because it is GMTV News. GMTV are paying Meridian to provide it. I think all regions do this, but in some regions (N.Ireland?) its not the local ITV company that provide the opts for GMTV anyway.
