  • I don't know what it is... she seems completely distracted by keeping everything "resonant" and focused on her technique, and it's distracting to me. That whole listening to herself thing where she places her hand near her ear is a terrible habit too...

  • Marilyn Horne was another "iron-dimpled" sweetheart, and as soon as she scored big in the bel canto bonanza, there were not many tiffs because basically if she didn't get her way, she went away! Now that I've made you laugh, explain to me why you, assuming you are in your right mind, would accept thumb-sucking in the signature Romantic role for a mezzo soprano? Or nail biting? How about nose-picking? How about flicking it across the stage after you dig for gold? We are already distracted.

  • @sillyboydeux "false analogy" ..... Monster-Art played Butterfly...while she was almost 300 lbs - FACT. Oh and I bet you dollars to donuts (if Monster did not eat them all) that Marilyn Horne would not only suck her thumb but anything else the director put in front of her ... as far s the "medication and a nap" comment ... wow you really are silly ... but it made me laugh so hard i think i want to marry you!!!

  • @netrebko1224 But the director didn't tell her to weigh 400 lbs., now did they? So on the one hand you espouse stage direction that is neither plausible or relevant to the drama and on the other, for the sake of "winning an argument" you create a false analogy to another gifted singer with a weight problem. Maybe it's time for your medication and a nap!

  • @netrebko1224 Oh, I agree she has a stunning voice and beautiful technique, but unfortunately very few singers have the stature of say a Marilyn Horne or a Jon Vickers who were highly selective about which director they worked with, and could add and drop whatever music in the role didn't suit their voices. But I don't think Marilyn Horne would have agreed to thumb-sucking, in any way remotely possible. Nor Agnes Baltsa, Tatiana Troyanos, Kasarova, Bartoli, et al.

  • @sillyboydeux and speaking of credibility ... did anyone EVER think that a 400 lb, 40 year old Montsearrat Caballe was a convincing teenage geisha ... but millions flocked to see her!!!

  • @sillyboydeux oh i see ... i forgot we were talking about bumble bees and not the best mezzo since Horne...who was directed to suck her thumb...which diminished nothing...from an amazing aria ..... sorry my mistake...

  • @netrebko1224 It's classical romantic theater, classical romantic art. Of course, you can do anything you want to if you have the funding from a big house and the consent of the general director. That still doesn't make it plausible as living drama. The Staatsoper of Berlin produced a hideous version of Nabucco wherein Abigaille wore a scholastic robe and a business suit and the chorus were dressed as bumble bees. So yes, you are right, I am single-minded insofar as credibility is concerned.
