@MayChild8 - he got one in 1997

@Chrisdrumz the main problem was (for the prquels) that nobody disagreed with anythign lucas said, thats why they suck

@Chrisdrumz A LOT of people help all successful directors throughout their careers. Whether you respect it or not, Lucas revolutionised cinema, and that is why he is considered an amazing film maker. Star Wars is THE movie. There are no other movies that have left the cultural impact that Star Wars has done.

Why do people call Lucas an amazing film maker? THX was lame,Graffiti was ok(overated!),Star Wars(1977) was fantastic(because he had A LOT of people helping) and the prequels were HORRIBLE. I'd say he got lucky. He's NOT a good director. He has good ideas that require the input of others(a HUGE amount of input actually) to make them good.

@conrod15reveiw His contribution to popular culture means he is one of the most significant individuals in film history. He was a game changer. Sure, people might hate some of his work. Or not see Star Wars as that great. But it changed things. And then to back it up with Indiana Jones. George Lucas shaped his generation and all generations that followed.
In my opinion, the two people whose contribution to film deserves acclaim more than anyone are Spielberg and Lucas.

@OnlyFoolsAndHorsesHQ John Williams did indeed get an AFI for music. AFI declared the #1 theme in history to be STAR WARS WHOOOOOO

Sorry for going off topic... but John Williams also deserves an AFI.
