Lord Rees, the Astronomer Royal and Master of Trinity College, talks to us about the Apollo 11 moon landings in an interview that reflects on the legacy of the lunar expedition and considers the future of space exploration.
I suspect that professor Rees is correct : at the present time, at least, we should concentrate our efforts on robotic exploration. Think, if we could halve these so-called «defence budgets», which mainly finance wars of aggression abroad, and use the resources saved to finance this type of scientific exploration instead !...
It is chilling to remember that even at the time there were people who thought the money spent on the Apollo Programme could better have been devoted to Discovering God. (Or to 'the UK defence budget' ... why does religious conviction always fit in so well with murdering foreigners)?
If nothing else the Moon Landings were a beacon to people with no appetite to spend their lives on their knees.
