it is a legality for the promoter to pay the bands unless they are voluntary and therefore wont need paying but if they do require payment then they will be paid from the money off ticket sales and then keep all the money made from merch etc

@jennybabes91, in fact the venue does not get the money from ticket sales, that money infact goes to the promoter of the gig, the money is used to pay off the venue yes, but at least 75% of this money goes to covering costs of advertising and things of the sort, if you look at it from the artists point of view, everything to get the gig you are playing noticed needs to be paid for, and afterwards the profit that is left (assuming there is one) will be used to pay the bands...this is because...

@MrUnderexcellent Errm, i don't know what it's like for bigger bands, but i know a lot of smaller bands don't get money from ticket sales, the venue does and then the bands cut is just enough for travelling/petrol costs and that's depending on the cut the venue/ticket sales have got. Bands get money primarily from merch and record sales. :)
